Microsoft is enhancing the functionality of its Windows Hello authentication system, which encompasses facial and fingerprint recognition, within Windows 11. The updated Windows Hello experience is currently undergoing beta testing with Windows Insiders and features visual enhancements, new icons, and advancements in passkey technology.

This redesigned user interface will be visible not only on the Windows 11 login screen but also when utilizing passkeys to access websites and applications. The Windows team states, “We have reimagined the user experience for Windows security credentials related to passkeys, resulting in a more streamlined interface that facilitates secure and rapid authentication.” Users will now find it easier to navigate between different authentication methods and select passkeys or devices more intuitively.

While Microsoft already supports passkeys in Windows 11, the current process for using them from a mobile device involves scanning QR codes and relies on an outdated interface. The introduction of a new sign-in interface for passkeys and Microsoft account authentication will significantly enhance this experience as part of the overall Windows Hello redesign.

Additionally, Microsoft has developed a new API for third-party password and passkey managers, enabling developers to integrate seamlessly with this modern Windows Hello experience. This will allow Windows 11 users to authenticate with applications and websites on their PCs using passkeys from their mobile devices. The updated passkey experience will also facilitate the saving of passkeys to third-party applications or syncing them with Microsoft accounts.

Microsoft has initiated testing of the new Windows Hello experience within the beta channel (23H2), and it is anticipated to be available in the dev channel (which is based on 24H2) once builds are resumed shortly. It is expected that this updated Windows Hello interface will be rolled out to all Windows 11 users in the upcoming months.
